Subject this week: Moose
For July we’ll be concentrating on animals! Moose are both iconic Canadiana and sometimes difficult to get right. We’ll simplify by going over the structure of the body and some of the things that make moose tricky. You’ll find these dudes are actually a lot of fun to paint!

I use resin to cast these little treasures so that I can encapsulate interesting elements that inspire the viewer to peer in. A plaster and paper mix creates the amorphous shape inside but I add a quartz crystal for just a little touch of alchemy, to gather the viewers’ positive emotional energy and release it back later when the sculpture finds a home. One of the parts I like the most about my little sculptures is the metal powder incorporated into the face of the creature. It’s called cold cast metal when it’s added to resin. I use bronze, copper and other metal powders, and love the way it polishes to a metallic finish that contrasts so well with the clear, colourful resin. I hope you enjoy them!
Subject this week: #3 Abstraction: What to leave out?
For this class you don’t need to have taken the “Introduction to Gestalt Theory” but we’re going to explore one of the concepts discussed: Closure. The brain is good at filling in gaps to create a whole. Interesting abstraction often leaves a lot for the viewer to interpret, but how do you know what to leave out? In this class we will explore this idea.

Bunny!
We take a different perspective on bunnies in this class. With his fuzzy feet in the air and sprawled out on his back this guy is expressed mostly by his fur. We’ll go over how to create fur with a loose but realistic look. I also cover how to paint white animals with lots of depth. Pick up some new skills in this fun, supportive class. Check the download for the link.
